I am checking back this afternoon. Please let me know if there is anything more I should be thinking about. There is also soot on a relief on the detail panel below the mantel. I also tried a spot for about 10 minutes with the rust remover but nothing happened. This I suspect is probably just soot-It is more of a grey blue color than brown (see picture below).
