Good afternoon! We did a cleaning and sealing job on travertine several months ago and we filled a number of holes and hairline cracks with a knife grade polyester adhesive. In time, it appears the adhesive fill has come loose and bits of the stone are flaking off along the cracks, but the deeper holes that were filled look good and intact. We are very good about not leaving excess fill on the surface, so I’m fairly certain the fill went into the cracks, but perhaps not deeply. It appears that the very top of the stone is brittle and spalling along these cracks.

What might cause this to happen? Any reasonable remedies anyone could recommend?
