Tony,
Yes, if it etches, it’s not quartzite. Probably a dolomitic marble or similar. Try taking it high in grit like you did but try polishing with Granite Polishing Powder Light, Granites Gloss, or a Tin Oxide or high grit calcined Alumina product.
Do a test to confirm then results and procedure before general application.
