Agree with Bob
Just adding we always hone the surface as you want the product which is acidic to absorb into the stone.
Sometimes we will melt it into a small amount of water creating a paste like consistency. Cover with plastic overnight.
This seems to work pretty well but ofcourse depends on how much rust is involved.
