Could also possibly be the factory coating .
In some
Cases their material comes coated with a lacquer
See if you have some spare pieces and if they are raw.
I have run into various issues when stripping Saltillo and terracotta.
If the spare pieces are raw Saltillo chances are it's the acrylic that was used after the install.
